8 Indian destinations that shine in monsoon

1. Meghalaya

Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong (Asia's cleanest village) are green beyond belief. The living root bridges of Nongriat are at their dramatic best. July–September.

2. Coorg (Karnataka)

Coffee estate stays, waterfalls (Abbey, Iruppu), and Madikeri at its greenest. Roads can shut briefly — check before driving.

3. Valley of Flowers (Uttarakhand)

The Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO site, blooms in mid-July to mid-September. A 10-km trek from Govindghat.

4. Spiti (Himachal)

Shoulder season. Fewer tourists, green patches in a normally-beige landscape. Pre-August roads are safer than late-monsoon.

5. Munnar & Thekkady (Kerala)

Mountain Kerala is magical in monsoon. Ayurveda centres run their best programmes. Hill trains work normally.

6. Malshej Ghat (Maharashtra)

Waterfalls everywhere, flamingo sightings at Malshej Lake, cool weather. 3h from Mumbai.

7. Udaipur (Rajasthan)

Counterintuitive, but Udaipur's lakes fill, palaces reflect, and it feels like a different city. 30–40% cheaper hotels.

8. Dudhsagar Falls (Goa–Karnataka border)

Accessible via the Konkan railway or 4WD safari from Mollem. The falls only run in monsoon.

What to pack
