1. Turtuk
India's northernmost village, opened to tourists in 2010. Balti culture, apricot orchards, zero noise. Three hours beyond Nubra Valley.
2. Hanle
Hanle has the Indian Astronomical Observatory at 4,500m — one of the world's highest. India's first declared dark-sky reserve. You can see the Milky Way with your eyes.
3. Zanskar
The valley few reach. The road opens only June–September. Drive from Kargil to Padum, then day-trip to Phuktal Monastery which clings to a cliff.
4. Aryan Valley (Dha-Hanu)
Biradri community villages with a distinct ethnicity. Two hours west of Leh on the Indus.
5. Tso Moriri
Quieter than Pangong, at higher altitude (4,500m). Flamingos in summer, frozen in winter. Korzok village on its shore is inhabited by nomadic Changpa herders.
6. Hemis
Hemis Monastery is Ladakh's largest. Its festival (June/July, depending on Tibetan calendar) is the most photogenic mask dance in India.
