1. Bundi
A blue-walled fort town two hours south of Kota. Taragarh Fort is almost tourist-free. Rudyard Kipling wrote here. Stay at a haveli homestay.
2. Dungarpur
Southern Rajasthan, bordering Gujarat. Juna Mahal has the finest miniature paintings in the state. Two hours from Udaipur, zero crowds.
3. Khimsar
Mid-way between Jodhpur and Bikaner. Stay at Khimsar Fort — a real 16th-century fort turned hotel. Nearby sand dunes are quieter than Jaisalmer's.
4. Nagaur
The cattle fair here (late January/early February) is bigger than Pushkar and 10% of the tourists. The official Rajasthan Tourism calendar lists exact dates.
5. Banswara
Deep southern Rajasthan. Called "city of 100 islands" for its lake-dotted landscape. Tribal culture and monsoon green that surprises everyone.
6. Tonk
An hour from Jaipur — but nobody stops. Home to an exceptional Arabic manuscript collection at the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Arabic Persian Research Institute.
7. Mount Abu (offseason)
Most people go in summer. Try April or October for the Dilwara temples without the crowd.
8. Shekhawati
A triangle between Jhunjhunu, Mandawa, and Nawalgarh. Thousands of painted havelis. An open-air gallery of folk art. We often route this into our Mewar Slow Route for travellers who want more days.
